It was the middle of Covid in 2020. As I stared outside the window of my apartment in Arlington, Virginia, I realized I needed a change. Cooped up in my one-bedroom home, I craved excitement, adventure, and a new environment. Don't get me wrong, Arlington does provide those things. However, having grown up in the Northern Virginia area my entire life, I needed something different. I wrote down a list of ten cities in the United States, wanting to envision what life would look like there, and ultimately decided on Richmond, Virginia. It was just close enough, but yet far enough for me to explore something entirely different. If I had known how it would turn out, I would have done it much sooner.
After visiting Richmond for the first time, I absolutely fell in love with it. I felt like I had been cheated, not knowing how amazing it was my entire life. I ended up moving to a beautiful neighborhood called Church Hill. Although I love Church Hill to this day, I eventually fell in love with another neighborhood where I currently reside: The Fan District. To say I am truly in love with this neighborhood is an understatement. It has become my identity.
If I were to do it all over again, here are three things I would do to find my perfect neighborhood before looking for homes there:
1. Research and Visit Potential Neighborhoods
Before making any decisions, research various neighborhoods in the city you're considering. Look into aspects like safety, amenities, accessibility, and the overall vibe. Online forums, city guides, and social media can provide insights. Once you have a shortlist, visit these neighborhoods if possible. Spend a day or two walking around, visiting local cafes, parks, and shops. Pay attention to how you feel in the area and how residents interact.
2. Connect with Locals
Talking to people who already live in the neighborhood can give you a perspective that online research cannot. Join local online communities or social media groups. Ask questions about daily life, community events, and any concerns they might have. Locals can offer invaluable advice on the best places to live, eat, and socialize. Their firsthand experiences can help you gauge whether you would fit in.
3. Consider Your Lifestyle and Needs
Reflect on what aspects of a neighborhood are most important to you. Do you prefer a quiet, family-friendly area or a vibrant, bustling district? Are you looking for proximity to work, schools, public transport, or recreational facilities? Make a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves. This will help you narrow down your options and ensure that the neighborhood you choose aligns with your lifestyle and needs.
By following these steps, you can find a neighborhood that not only suits your current situation but also feels like home. Moving to a new city is a significant step, but with the right preparation, it can lead to an exciting and fulfilling chapter in your life.
